Snow Day!

Growing up in Rhode Island in the 70s, winter usually meant getting up earlier than usual to listen to the radio in hopes of hearing those two victorious words: “Snow Day!” My 2 older brothers and I usually can’t let a day pass without bickering amongst ourselves, but the winter season united us. We can go on for days without so much as an argument over the last package of Pop Rocks. We believed that there was strength in numbers so we resolved to pray together hoping that the weather gods would hear our plea better. And just in case our prayers were not strong enough, we slept with our pyjamas inside out, snuck spoons from the kitchen to tuck under our pillows, flushed ice cubes down the toilet and if we do feel a hint of frost in the air, we would perform a sort of Indian war dance around the dining table while ululating and chanting a "snow chant" of our own invention. Oh how it excited us when we woke up to frosted windows, blanketed with a layer of crisp, white snow! We would hastily turn on the radio and cross our fingers as we eagerly awaited the verdict. It was such a triumph to be the one to yell, “It’s a snow day!”

The Blancho

I have, up till this day, a habit of wanting to wrap myself cocoon-like in a blanket whenever the temperature was cold enough. I don’t know exactly why but I guess “cozy” is how it made me feel. When I was 8, my mom made me a poncho from an old blanket by folding it diagonally and cutting a round hole in the middle. We called it a Blancho. I could hardly remember any snow day without the Blancho around me.

My brothers and I would deposit ourselves in the den and happily eat our breakfast while watching Captain Kangaroo and some daytime game shows. Although the Blancho allowed me to use my hands whilst keeping the blanket on me, it was still cumbersome and awkward. Snow day afternoons meant sledding, snow ball fights and more. If the weather was too severe, indoor games and some hot cocoa would occupy our day. But with either of these activities, the Blancho had to go as it hindered me from freely using my arms. A few years ago, I saw an episode of Today with all the hosts dressed in what appeared to be robes made of fleece. It was later made clear to me that what they were wearing were in fact blankets!

Discovering the Forever Lazy

Well, why didn’t my mom think of that!! The idea of fashioning a blanket into a robe (or a robe from a blanket) was so unbelievably matter-of-fact that I couldn’t help but laugh at it. I mean, it is so ridiculously simple that you have to ask yourself why no one thought of this sooner but if you have thought of this in the past, you might have dismissed the idea as goofy. But there you have it! A blanket with sleeves! I didn’t really want to buy one though, I thought, “Why not just wear my bathrobe backwards?” I dismissed the idea as cute but laughably silly, so not until after repeatedly seeing the Forever Lazy being featured or referenced to in TV did my curiosity finally get the best of me. I was finally decided on purchasing the Forever Lazy when my husband surprised me with my own red one! He gave it to me as a silly sort-of half joke knowing my habit of wrapping myself in a blanket all the time. I felt silly putting it on and I was self-consciously giggling when I did so the first time. My husband was trying to keep a straight face but when my son remarked that I looked like a witch and asked me whether he could borrow it for Halloween; we all just burst out laughing at how silly I looked! It didn’t take me long to love my Forever Lazy though! It was toasty warm inside and I could conveniently channel surf while having my other hand in a bowl of popcorn!

Forever Lazy Good & Bad

Firstly the obvious question on people’s minds, which also happened to be my first question when I initially saw the Forever Lazy: why not just wear a bathrobe backwards?

The obvious answer to this question: No bathrobe is long enough. I am 5’3” and the FE is too long for me, long enough to go past my feet and trail on the floor.  No bathrobe is long enough to do that. So clearly, it being long is both a pro and a con (a little bit), but I guess it would be pointless if it isn’t long enough to go past your feet, kinds of defeats the purpose of it. I suggest hitching it up when getting from point A to point B as not to be a walking vacuum cleaner. It’s not heavy so mobility-wise, I don’t mind wearing the FE all over the house.

The length of the FE is actually 64” from arm hole to bottom, that’s 5’ 4”. I guess that’s okay since I Googled the average American height and it is 5’4” for women and around 5’9” for men. A perfect fit for many women and a bit “barely-covered” for men. It has no closure at the back so it gives you that hospital gown feel, I got used to it though and I don’t mind it anymore. To me, it simply feels like having a blanket on me from front to back. But with the full use of hands! So the pros outweigh the cons. And you know those times when you wake up in the middle of the night groping in the dark for your blanket because you somehow managed to kick it off yourself? Never gonna happen with the Forever Lazy, it keeps me nice and warm inside  It is perfect for everyday use, so everyday feels like a snow day for me!

You’d want to be all snuggled up in this baby everyday so I suggest buying more than one unless you’re perfectly okay with not washing your blanket ever. My son, who is now 10, loves his Forever Lazy, he even brings it with him when he stays over night with his friends. He says he loves it for its pockets but I also have a strong suspicion that they use it as a costume for their various games.

So, what’s the verdict?

Though I no longer have the luxury of enjoying Snow Days, I can easily recreate childhood memories of staying home, eating breakfast in front of the TV while all wrapped up in a toasty warm blanket! With arms! Yes, I LOVE my Forever Lazy!
